The first time I saw it, went almost berserk within the very depths of my soul -there's far too much about feeling, understanding, witnessing and living in this movie to stay quiet and phlegmatic after having watched it. Is it the very opening of the movie that brings this state of facts, as you're told you're just poor little bastards who can't understand anything of what's going on, that you'd remember everything keeps going on and on and on without you to escape it? Is it because these first sentences I can't quote are dedicated to the young protagonist in which we will entirely penetrate? Or may it be due to the almost unreal living reality the entire movie flashes over you? That very feeling that you could have done such things, in such a situation, that every guy down here might be anything we usually like to consider as morally impossible? Will you bare the absolute passivity of civilians -if we can call 'passivity' the fact of trying to save one's life by helping anyone stronger than one is? Maybe it is just because it depicts reality as it might be -not understandable, not to be focused on, not to be made or modified as we'd like it to be, but just as something you can't escape, that stands still when you're happy, when you're suffering, and dying... Go and watch this movie -this is for sure. Look at it as it is -a requiem for loads of massacres -the first of all being perhaps one of instinct. Go, watch this movie. And feel hard for long. Be joyful if you feel bad.

However, they are the last two films about World War Two that I watched and, better than any other war films I’ve seen, they show the horror, the insanity and the hopelessness of war. I decided to write about them together because of this link, and to try a slightly different format. Both films offer a viewpoint we are not really accustomed to, whatever we know about the war, and neither becomes jingoistic or clichéd. Downfall follows the last day or two of the Third Reich before the Russians take Berlin and end Hitler’s mission. To begin with, it is notable for being a German film that takes a point of view inside Hitler’s bunker – that of his secretary, Traudl Junge. Junge died in 2002, having offered an intimate account of those last days in both a book and a documentary film (which I have not seen). Downfall is based on her book, as well as on Inside Hitler’s Bunker by Joachim Fest. It amalgamates these two reliable sources into a definitive film on the subject, a film that is masterful in every aspect. Technically, it is magnificent. One feels truly transported to the real scenes as they occurred, like in so few other films (especially war films). Clearly, the crew have meticulously researched the necessary details to come up with a realistic setting. It is director Hirschbiegel’s task to make this setting cinematic, and he does so without ever resorting to cheap camera or editing tricks. He allows the inherent fascination of the subject to come through, shooting it in a variety of ways to maximise its effect. Shots down long rooms are memorable, but so are wide shots of Berlin being bombed, and tight closeups on an actor’s face. He never puts a foot wrong. With that out of the way, I can focus on the people. Junge is portrayed as extremely vulnerable, perhaps only halfway aware of the grand situation but acutely aware of the danger of remaining in the bunker. Lara, the actor, is so pretty it’s easy for her to tug at our heartstrings, but she doesn’t fall back only on that. Her dialogue is delivered directly, nervously, but always warmly, and one cannot help but wish dearly that she will survive. Of course, we already know that she does – spoken comments from the real Junge bookend the film – but one becomes so immersed in the experience, you more or less forget what you knew beforehand. Junge is the only person who can bring out vulnerability in Hitler, as evidenced by the shot above. He is often warm and friendly, but we only see weakness in him when he looks into Junge’s eyes, and they are great moments. We do also see him becoming angry and irrational, and Ganz’s work in these scenes is absurdly good. His performance as a whole is the high watermark of a glittering career that has seen him work with Schaffner, Herzog and Wenders. Any doubts you might have about an actor being able to convincingly portray Hitler are quashed as soon as he appears on screen. Eva Braun seems in denial of the whole thing. She insists that the dancing continue at a party that is being bombed and, in yet another image burned into my brain, applies lipstick in the mirror and half-smiles. Half of her fights to believe that there is still hope against the other half which knows, very practically, that the end is very close indeed. It’s horrible to imagine that struggle of faith – how would you cope if the tanks were bearing down but you husband insisted on remaining to the last? Possibly the most distressing scene in the film concerns Frau Goebbels and her children; even if you know what happens, it is incredibly affecting to watch. She is the most unshakeable character in the film, the most brainwashed, heavily influenced as she is by her husband (who, in one scene, shows himself to be of very weak will as he waits outside a particular bunker). Nearly everyone retains some semblance of faith in the Fuhrer and the Fatherland, but they are all without hope. The practicality of the resolution of many – suicide – is jarringly insane, but clearly the only way they see to end the conflict. There is so much death, it is overwhelming but never desensitizing. I nearly bawled my eyes out in several places. And when genuine hope finally appears, it is as though a great weight has been lifted. The immersive realism of Downfall is in direct contrast to the atmosphere and occasional beauty of Come and See. It is more like a collaboration between Kubrick and Herzog on a brutal, unflinching war film. Produced by the Soviet Union government to commemorate 40 years of the war having ended, it focuses on how Bielorussia (now independent as Belarus) was caught between Moscow and Berlin and was more or less completely sacked. We follow a boy of 12, Florya, as he joins the army in the crusade against the Evil Hun. Very quickly, his illusions of glory in Stalin’s service are shattered – his company leaves him behind to guard the camp, which is subsequently bombed to oblivion. Thus begins a series of episodes as Florya attempts to gain a foothold in the war, something, somewhere, anything to give his life meaning beyond continued survival. Downfall illustrates the hopelessness of war on a personal level; Come and See illustrates it for the many, forcing you to appreciate the unbelievable horror of it all. There are burned bodies still breathing and talking; entire towns incinerated; captured soldiers pleading for their lives. I foolishly ate a sandwich as I watched, and countless times I would get it within an inch of my mouth before being frozen in horror at what I was seeing. It is a relentless stream of remarkably shocking images, tied together through the plight of this young, no longer innocent boy. The images are depraved, but there is a poetry about them all. A cow’s rolling eyeball is mesmerizing, as is a human face laughing rapturously as it looks upon intensely evil deeds. In a way, much of this film is quite beautiful, conveying an ethereality of war that most films eschew in favour of gritty realism. This doesn’t diminish its impact; in fact, it hits even harder when you are made aware that none of this is a dream. It really happened, probably much like this. It would have been difficult to believe, at any stage, and always horrifying. I must also make note of the sound design, which is amongst the most impressive in all the films I have seen. It goes some way towards immersing us in the hellish, bewildering environment of war. Aleksei Kravchenko gives one of the great child performances as Florya. For the second half of the film, he rarely speaks, but his face ages visibly – not just with the makeup. Starting out a fresh-faced, smiling, hopeful boy, his facial expression becomes flatter and more hopeless as time wears on. Finally he becomes angry, and in a completely against-the-grain (but certainly effective) montage he unleashes all his aggression, signalling a new focus in his life. He has found a reason to march with the army, and the necessary will to be taken seriously. Like the will of the characters in Downfall, his drive is profoundly affecting in its insanity. This was director Klimov’s last film, though he lived for a further eighteen years. I can understand why one might end their career with a film as stunning as this. It isn’t as complete a film as Downfall, particularly in its one-sidedness, but its unflinching eye hits you harder. I warn you, do not watch these two films on a double-bill – the effects could be dire. Do watch them both, though, if you can and feel you’re up to it. I haven’t seen two better films about war, ever, nor have I seen two films which so conclusively argue against there being any more war. Well, this turned out to be more like two reviews back-to-back than a comparison piece. Oh well. I am still learning.

Based on the commentary of many who were actually there. It seems that this Russian propaganda flick has confused the German army with the Mongol horde; as it did show German soldiers being drunk on duty and wearing shabby uniforms, which is as likely as meeting sober Danes. So I hope that in the next Mongol movie the Mongols dont attack with Tiger tanks; while the Russians have doomed themselves here, as the world has since then seen in Chechnya that they themselves fight partisans in the selfsame manner as they show the Germans doing here.

When I started this movie, I didnt know anything about it other than the fact it was a Vietnam movie, I thought it was a movie like “Stripes” with Bill Murray and Harold Ramis at the beginning, after it got into the war, thats when all connections with the characters end and then it shows the cost of war, I then knew i was wrong obviously.

For those that haven't viewed 'Come And See. IMO) it is an incredible film & not to be missed... The SS battalion named in the film didn't actually this scene is 'inspired ' by actions that took place in 1943, under the name 'Operation Cottbus. this was supposedly to deal with the problems 'caused by partisans. largely under the direction of Dirlewanger. Kaminski) SS units & various collaborators had 'free reign' to deal with 'these problems in a suitable manner. Units under Dirlewangers command had previously used the method of locking people in buildings and setting them ablaze in Poland. on occasions doors would be left open, so those trying to escape could be shot 'for amusement. Dirlewanger was also described by those that knew or worked for him as a rapist, necrophiliac, paedophile & he was okay until he got drunk.

I was never particularly interested in ballet until I accidentally stumbled upon this video last week. Svetlana's arms don't just move gracefully, they seem to flow in an exquisite, otherworldly suppleness. Everything she did was so elegant. I kept thinking can anyone be that beautiful and expressive? Her dancing has been a revelation to me about what ballet can be. I realize that she is really the only ballerina that I have actually watched closely but she is sufficient to make me love this art form. Svetlana Zakharova is so incredible. I guess this is a version with a much happier ending. I presume here the spell was broken and she turned back into a human. Oh, jester.

She was born on a full moon. I'm confused, what do the black swans represent in act iiii. It's really fun to be able to compare them back to back. Thanks for this terrific post. All are wonderful in their own way. Overall, I would have to say the Bolshoi dancers are doing a much better job than the Americans at keeping the drama, artistry, and musical interpretation IN classical ballet. (The Americans seem more interested in athletic prowess and outrageous extensions and high-number turn at the expense of control, lyricism, dramatic interpretation and musicality. I'm allowed to say since I'm an American. That is why I keep coming back to watch the Bolshoi (and seeing them live is on the bucket list. May I add they the Bolshoi have improved technically and have cleaned up the open hip arabesque thing - which I never thought very attractive - they used to do when I was growing up (about 45 years ago. C'mon America: We have Hollywood, we know drama, we can do better! Abstract and emotion-less movement may work well for Balanchine, but it's not the only way to dance classical ballet, in my ever-to-be-humble opinion...

His next play, Cyrano de Bergerac, was hugely popular when it premiered in 1897, and as a result Rostand became one of the most famous writers in Europe. He died in 1918, one of the millions of victims of the global flu pandemic. Historical Context of Cyrano De Bergerac It’s important to understand some French history when reading Cyrano. The majority of the play is set in 1640, when Louis XIII was King of France. Louis was widely regarded as a weak and ineffectual king, more interested in decadent parties than nation building. His most trusted advisor—and, supposedly, the “Grey eminence” of the French court—was Cardinal Richelieu, whose name is synonymous with power and prestige in Cyrano. During the reign of Louis XIII, France clashed with its neighbor, Spain, in a series of battles throughout the 1630s and 40s. At times, France invaded Spanish territory in an effort to expand its borders. In 1640, France attempted to invade the Spanish province of Arras, and for more than a year, French soldiers tried to starve out Spanish troops in their fortresses. The siege was largely a failure—indeed, it wasn’t until 1654 (around the time when the final act of Cyrano is set) that France succeeded in conquering Arras. Finally, it’s important to keep in mind that Cyrano takes place at a time when France was still building its identity as a modern nation-state. For centuries, the provinces of France had been only loosely connected, and it wasn’t until the 1600s that these provinces began to be grouped together into a strong, stable state. Even in the 1640s, many Parisians—the dominant cultural group of France—regarded people from other parts of France with suspicion and amusement. Other Books Related to Cyrano De Bergerac Cyrano de Bergerac alludes to many famous European books. During the Siege of Arras, Cyrano reads from a book by the great French philosopher René Descartes—presumably the book is the Principles of Philosophy. Descartes was instrumental in the rise of the Enlightenment, and in books like Principles of Philosophy, he popularized the philosophical method known as systematic doubt, positing that the only entity that one can be sure exists is the mind—this sounds something like Cyrano’s rugged, independent worldview. The play also alludes to various genres and styles of European literature. The love verses that Cyrano delivers to Roxane throughout the play imitate the convention of the Petrarchan sonnet. During the 1600s, new translations of the classical poet Petrarch resulted in a “boom” in love sonnets. In a love sonnet, the speaker usually professes his sincere, immortal love for a beautiful woman. Evidently, Cyrano has read some of these works, and riffs on them freely when speaking to Roxane. Finally, Cyrano’s character resembles that of a Romantic hero-poet, such as Lord Byron. Byron—often praised for his “panache”—was famously free with his money, and wrote hundreds of romantic poems to the women he loved, including “She Walks In Beauty” and “When We Two Parted. ” It’s entirely possible that Rostand, writing at the end of the 19th century, was thinking of the famous Lord Byron when he devised the character of Cyrano—a dashing, flamboyant, warrior-poet. Beginning in Haiti in the early sixties, Zombi Child" deals with voodoo and is one of the best and most poetic horror films in many a moon. It is obvious from the title and the setting that we are meant to think of a much earlier film with a similar setting but that would appear to be where the comparisons with Jacques Tourneur's "I Walked with a Zombie" ends for in the next scene we are in comtemporary France and a group of schoolgirls are being taught French history in a very white classroom.
What follows is a deliciously unsettling movie that manages to encompass the pains of teenage romance with a tale of the 'undead' as a metaphor for colonialism and it actually works. I can't think of too many examples in recent cinema where two opposing themes have been as beautifully united as they are here. In some ways it's closer to something like "The Neon Demon" or the recent remake of "Suspiria" than it is to Val Lewton. Here is a film with a creeping sense of dread, we've all seen films in which schoolgirls are not as sweet as they appear to be) and the grand guignol finale is as spooky as a good horror movie should be. It also confirms director Bertrand Bonello as one of the most exciting talents working anywhere today.

The best DJ's always took you on a journey, they knew when to tease a tune quickly, or let a mix evolve. They could build a set, drop something absolutely insane, take it back down and build it up again, but the crowds responded to it. It was all about contrast light and dark, and that was always reflected too in Headz releases. You'd get one side that was pure Bluenote, the other would have something downtempo. It's a musical skill that's being totally overlooked as a lot of sets are now relentless. I can't imagine many DJ's reaching the first breakdown let alone that iconic second drop that Dillinja always did so well.
