'J'Accuse' Movie Trailer - The #MeToo campaign has launched a vitriolic attack on Roman Polanski’s cinematic masterpiece on the Dreyfus Affair, J’accuse (English title: An Officer and a Spy). With the full support of France’s banker-president, Emmanuel Macron, its supporters are working to brand Polanski as a rapist, denounce viewers or supporters of J’accuse as rape apologists and suppress the film. The defining characteristic of this reactionary effort is its contempt for the historical, political and one might add moral issues bound up with the monumental 1894-1906 legal battle to clear a French-Jewish officer, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, framed on charges of spying for Germany. J’accuse currently tops the French box office, with over a half-million tickets sold in its first week of showings. Yet #MeToo advocates are aggressively campaigning against this great work of art, and aligning themselves with far-right positions. MeToo supporters rallied at a theater in Paris on November 12, brandishing signs reading “J’accuse [I accuse] the rapist Polanski, ” and shut down a pre-screening of the film. Since the launch of the film in France on November 13, they have blocked other screenings in the Paris area, in Rennes, Saint Nazaire, Bordeaux, Caen and other cities. A widely publicized slogan of #MeToo demonstrators against J’accuse is “Polanski rapist, cinemas guilty, viewers complicit! ” Leading actors have been forced to cancel appearances to promote the film, as #MeToo supporters have attempted to block all such efforts. Jean Dujardin was prevented from publicizing J’accuse on TF1 television, and Emmanuelle Seigner was forced to abandon an appearance on France Inter. MeToo supporters and elected officials are trying to impose local bans on the film. Initially, Socialist Party (PS) official Gérald Cosme announced a ban on the film in the Seine Saint-Denis department north of Paris. Cosme was forced to retract the ban, however, after an outcry from film directors and movie theater staff, who announced they would defy the ban. Stéphane Goudet, the director of the Le Meliès theater in Seine Saint-Denis, addressed a Facebook post to Cosme, stating: “We demand from officials immediately a letter on the film directors we no longer have the right to show and the definition of their criteria. Is a committee of verification of artistic morality planned, as the democratic freedom of filmgoers is no longer sufficient? ” Goudet asked if famous artists including the novelist Louis-Ferdinand Céline and the painters Caravaggio and Paul Gauguin were also henceforth banned. Nonetheless, the #MeToo campaign has continued its hysterical attacks on the film, posting flyers with pictures of Polanski titled “Unpunished pedo-criminal. ” Disgracefully, France’s guild of authors, directors and producers (ARP) has announced plans to suspend Polanski, after he has directed what is arguably his most significant work in a decades-long career. Top officials of the Macron government are inciting and supporting this foul campaign. Minister for Equality between Women and Men Marlène Schiappa on November 13, and then government spokeswoman Sibeth Ndiaye the following day, declared they would not see J’accuse. Ndiaye said that she could not view Polanski’s film because she does “not share much with a man facing such accusations. ” Former Minister of Families, Children and Women’s Rights Laurence Rossignol effectively called for a boycott of the film, arguing that viewing it is “to offer [Polanski] narcissistic retribution. ” While she said she would not call for the “outlawing” of J’accuse, she said that given the rape allegations against Polanski, “Going to see the film is to throw in the towel. ” The claim that to show, view or support J’accuse is to endorse or excuse rape is a monumental and horrific slander. J’accuse is not a film about rape, sex or Polanski. It is a faithful recounting of the struggle against a state cover-up aimed at keeping the innocent Dreyfus in prison, waged over the course of years by Colonel Georges Picquart, ultimately together with world-famous novelist Émile Zola and left-wing political figures. The Dreyfus Affair eventually engulfed the entire French state machine and army general staff, nearly bringing down the national government. The country teetered on the brink of civil war. The affair separated France into two great camps, the pro-dreyfusards —in which the decisive force was the working class socialist movement led by Jean Jaurès—and the antidreyfusards, whose leading proponent was the anti-Semitic Action française of Charles Maurras. It was one of the important, early victories in the 20th century of the workers movement against the fascist forces that would later carry out the genocide of European Jewry during World War II. The claim that to be moved by such a powerful film is to be a rape apologist is disgusting and reactionary. Given the enormous historical and political significance of these questions, it is tantamount to a neo-fascistic appeal to racism, anti-Semitism and anti-working class hatred. The French state’s encouragement and incitement of the #MeToo campaign against J’accuse is bound up with its agenda of military-police repression, social austerity and appeals to extreme-right sentiment. Last year, Macron hailed Nazi-collaborationist dictator Philippe Pétain as a “great soldier, ” appealing to far-right riot police units as they launched the largest mass arrests in France since the Nazi Occupation against the “yellow vest” protests. Having endorsed Pétain, the Macron government is now seeking to block honest discussion of the Dreyfus Affair and adopting a hostile attitude toward Polanski’s film in support of Dreyfus. This is because Pétain’s Vichy regime had as its main base of support far-right groups founded by the antidreyfusards, the Action française and Maurras chief among them. Last year, powerful forces at Macron’s culture ministry sought, ultimately unsuccessfully, to bring out the complete works of Maurras. The anti-Semite Maurras began his career by hailing false documents prepared against Dreyfus as “absolute truth. ” After these documents were discredited in the 1899 retrial of Dreyfus, he defended them anyway, declaring he intended to “substitute what was desirable for sad reality. ” That is, since he, the army general staff and the Church desired to keep Dreyfus in prison, he would continue to defend the charges against the Jewish officer even though he knew they were lies. At the end of his career, Maurras hailed the French general staff’s sudden capitulation to the Nazis in 1940 and Pétain’s coming to power as a “divine surprise. ” Action française members then oversaw Vichy’s Jewish policy, which led to the deportation of over 70, 000 Jews from France to death camps in Germany and Poland. When he was condemned to life in prison for high treason after World War II and the fall of Vichy, Maurras cried out: “This is the revenge of Dreyfus! ” To understand not only the history but also the politics of our era, it is vital there be an honest, open and uncensored public discussion of these issues. The intervention of the #MeToo campaign goes, however, in an entirely opposite direction—towards censorship based on unsubstantiated allegations, and the degradation of public debate in line with the interests, in the final analysis, of the financial aristocracy. The pretext for the campaign against J’accuse was the publication in Le Parisien, on November 9, of allegations by photographer and former actress Valentine Monnier that Polanski raped her in 1975, when she was 18, in Gstaad, Switzerland. For 44 years, Monnier made no public statement about the alleged incident, for which the statute of limitations has expired. She presented no evidence to support her allegation, which Polanski strenuously denied through his lawyer. Monnier explained this silence by claiming she had forgotten about being raped but remembered the episode when she heard that J’accuse was coming out. “The body often communicates what the mind has buried, until age or an event brings back a traumatic memory, ” she said. The trigger, she claimed, was Polanski’s film: “Can it be tolerated, on the pretext of a film, under cover of History, to hear someone say J’accuse who branded you with hot iron, whereas you, the victim, cannot accuse him? ” The #MeToo campaign against J’accuse is based on false premises and unsubstantiated accusations. Monnier did not, as she implied, suddenly go to the press this month immediately after remembering she had been raped, shocked by trailers of the upcoming release of J’accuse. In fact, her statement and the #MeToo campaign were carefully prepared in discussions with French and US authorities over several years. Polanski pleaded guilty in Los Angeles in 1977 to unlawful sex with a minor, Samantha Geimer, and spent 42 days in prison for psychiatric examination under a plea deal. However, he fled the United States when a judge, anxious to burnish his reputation as tough on crime, made himself guilty of gross misconduct by announcing that he would scrap the plea deal and sentence Polanski to 50 years in prison. While Geimer has since said that she forgives Polanski and repeatedly called on the media to drop its relentless campaign, US authorities are still vindictively pursuing him to obtain his extradition for political reasons. Monnier said nothing of her allegations about a 1975 rape during the 1977 events. The first known mention she made of the alleged 1975 incident was in January 2018 when, inspired by the #MeToo movement targeting of Harvey Weinstein, she sent letters to Schiappa, French First Lady Brigitte Macron and the Los Angeles Police Department. Monnier “wrote again in 2019 about the Ministry of Culture’s financing of Roman Polanski’s film, ” the first lady’s office said. That such an operation would become the basis of an attempt to censor a major work of art testifies to the deeply anti-democratic character of the Macron government and its political allies. As for the #MeToo campaign, it is unmasked by its engagement in favor of censorship in line with a government seeking to promote the heritage of fascism.

However, I have spent half of my time here befuddled, or confused, by the expectations and conversations around me. I spend much of my day wondering whether or not I actually belong here and waiting for someone to realize they have made a mistake. I keep waiting to be summoned, or called, to the dean’s office. I expect to sit in Sally’s chair and listen as she explains that they misread my application and they confused me with someone else who is really much smarter than me. They meant to accept that girl, not me. School was never too difficult for me in the past and homework was something I would finish within a few minutes of arriving home, if I did not finish it on the bus. Now, however, homework takes me hours, sometimes even days, to complete, and even then it does not feel as if I have done it correctly. Before, when it was my turn to share with the class, I would feel as confident as a flag billowing in the wind. Now, I try not to be noticed because my confidence factor is a negative digit. Before, I would receive perfect scores on every spelling test and I always understood what my teachers were saying. Since starting Hartfield, however, I have been inundated, or overwhelmed, with new vocabulary words. Sometimes, I feel such abasement or deep humiliation, because I feel I am the only one who doesn’t understand what is going on. I find myself cowering or shrinking away from everyone in my seat, hoping the teacher does not call on me, because I am so lost. Many times, even though I know the teacher is discussing math or physics, it feels as if I am the victim of a harangue, a speech that is loud and attacking me for my ignorance. English class has become one of my hardest classes, since the teacher is not the only one using words I do not understand. As I listen to the class discuss the myths we have been reading, I realize the students are able to make connections I am unable to fathom, or completely understand, using a vocabulary that is essentially a foreign language to me. This past week, I have been trying to enhance my writing, trying to improve it by using more vocabulary words. However, although this entry is now replete, or full, of new words, I still feel inadequate. All I have done is create a journal entry that is maladroit or awkward and does not really read very well. How am I supposed to use these new words in my everyday speech if I need to continually look up their meaning? So, I continue to cower, hoping that my ineptitude remains unnoticed and that I never receive that summons. Melinda closed her writing journal and placed it on the table in front of her, grateful to be the last student to share this week’s entry. She hoped everyone had started daydreaming and was not really paying attention to what she had just read. When she had shared the entry with Walter last evening, he had suggested some new vocabulary words to improve her reflection, but she still felt awkward, as if she were pretending to be smarter than she actually was. With a sigh, Melinda opened her journal and scribbled that last thought at the bottom of the page before adding it to the stack in front of Mr. Johnson as the class filed out of the room. She was the last student to leave the room and almost bumped into someone standing just outside the classroom door, as if he were waiting for someone, probably Mr. Johnson. Melinda recognized the stocky boy who usually sat several seats away from her, but she was unable to remember his name, although she thought it might begin with an L. Eventually, she turned decided she should at least figure out his name. She felt her face grow hot as she turned to him. “Okay. I know this is incredibly rude, seeing as how we’ve been in class together for two weeks now, but I am horrible with names and I am drawing a complete blank, even though Mr. Johnson said it like half an hour ago. ” The boy laughed. “Mike. ” He held out his hand. They had arrived at Woodward and Melinda was slightly curious why Mike had not parted ways at Stanton the way most of her male friends did whenever they were walking together. “Mike Carson. ” “Melinda Luzzelli, ” Melinda shook his hand, giggling at his formality. After a moment, Melinda realized he was probably waiting for her to answer his earlier question. “It’s not exactly that I don’t know how to say what I mean. Walking down the stairs towards the Black Box, Melinda began imagining the different outfits in her closet, trying to decide what she should wear on her picnic. Melinda sat on the MAC steps, full of jitters as she waited for Mike to arrive. Maybe he would not show up. What if she had misunderstood and he did not want to have dinner with her? What if when he said MAC steps, he was referring to the ones behind the building, not in front of it, where she was currently sitting? Maybe he had asked her out as a joke and had no intention of joining her for dinner, laughing as she sat alone on the steps. In the middle of all her worries, there was the ghost of a thought running through Melinda’s mind continuously reminding her that she had no idea what she was supposed to do or say. Mike had suggested getting dinner from the MAC Attack, the snack bar on the upper level loft of the MAC, where, unlike the dining hall, students needed to pay for the food. Melinda wondered whether Mike expected Melinda to pay for her own food, or was he intending to pay for her. He didn’t expect her to pay for him, did he? Although her parents had funded her bank account, and Melinda had some money on her student account as well, she was uncomfortable buying food for someone she did not really know. Melinda was lost in her thoughts, oblivious to her surroundings, when she heard a voice beside her calling her name, breaking her concentration and returning her to the moment. Looking up, she saw Mike and immediately felt overdressed. Like most students, Mike had chosen to change into jeans, which the school dress code banned during classes and in the dining hall. Melinda, however, had selected a purple blouse that matched the purple flowers adorning her long dark skirt. "So, have you eaten here yet? ” “Um, no. ” “Well, I recommend the burgers. They’re much better than the ones they served for lunch yesterday. And, the milkshakes are pretty good, too. ” Although Melinda had already decided to order a grilled cheese, she decided to take Mike’s advice and try a burger and milkshake. When it was their turn to order, Mike approached the register first and ordered a bacon cheeseburger basket, which came with fries, and a strawberry milkshake. He handed the cashier his student ID, then walked to the end of the counter to begin dispensing ketchup from the pump into tiny containers. Relieved to be paying for her meal, and only her meal, Melinda ordered a cheeseburger basket and chocolate milkshake, then joined Mike, who handed her two small containers of ketchup. “I heard you order fries, so I got you some ketchup. ” Melinda thanked him and grabbed a straw and some napkins while she waited for her basket, which turned out to be a flimsy paper box about the size of a small shoebox. Mike and Melinda’s orders were called together, so they retrieved their boxes of food and Melinda followed Mike onto the varsity football field to the bleachers near the fifty-yard line. They took a minute to get settled, straddling the seats with their food between them, before Melinda decided to break the awkward silence. “So, how’ve your classes been so far? ” “Not bad. Not bad. Harder than I thought they would be. But, not too bad. English is probably the hardest for me. ” “Me, too! I just don’t get how we’re supposed to make all these connections. ” “Exactly! It’s too…I don’t know the word. It’s not cut and dry. Abstract? Is that the right word? ” Melinda shrugged. “It sounds right. ” Mike continued without acknowledging Melinda. “That’s why I like Spanish. There are rules. You learn the rules and you pass the test. ” Melinda grimaced as she remembered her Latin test earlier that week. “I’m still struggling to learn all the rules for Latin. But, I get what you’re saying. I feel that way about math. ” Mike groaned. “I have the worst math teacher. I literally do not understand anything he does on the board. I have to do the homework a day early so I can understand what is going on in class. If I don’t do well on his test, I think I might bring it up with the dean. ” Melinda was uncertain how to respond, so she waited a few minutes until the silence grew awkward again before resuming the conversation. “So, um, what other classes are you taking? ” “English, Spanish, math, physics, and acting. ” “That sounds interesting. You like acting? ” “Well, I thought it would be easy, since I used to act in commercials when I was younger. But, we’re doing Shakespeare, which is stage acting and completely different. ” Again, Melinda was uncertain how to respond, but after another long pause, Mike broke the silence inquiring about her classes. “Oh, well. I have, um, English, math, Latin, physics, and drawing. Oh, and orchestra, ” Melinda added, remembering the fact she had written “Practice school song” in her assignment pad. “Orchestra sounds cool. I don’t play any instruments. What do you play? ” Melinda drank the remainder of her milkshake before replying. “The flute. ” “Excellent, Excellent. How is orchestra? Wait. That doesn’t meet during the day, does it? ” Melinda shook her head as she slurped the dredges of her milkshake before recalling her rehearsal the previous evening. “Nah. Orchestra meets during study hours. I’m in the Wind Orchestra and we meet Monday and Thursday nights. Last night was our first rehearsal. I sit at the end of the second row, which I guess is the worst chair, but I don’t mind. I play to have fun, not to be the best. Besides, my friend Caroline sits in front of me. Which, is actually a very good seat, even if it’s not first chair. ” “What kind of music do you play in orchestra? ” “Well, Mr. Williams said we would be playing marches this season, but last night we just focused on learning the school song. We’ll be playing it at the next all-school meeting. ” “Ugh. That song is so dated. Remember at orientation, how someone asked to rewrite it? I can’t remember who that was, but I hope he does it. ” “That might be cool, I guess. But, I kinda liked when the whole school sang it for convocation. And at the all-school meeting last week. It gave the room a kind of energy. ” Melinda could see Mike did not understand the feeling she was attempting to convey, so she quickly changed the subject before the conversation grew too awkward. “So, do you, um, have any hobbies? ” Mike beamed. “Well, there’s football, of course. I’ve been playing forever, but I don’t think the coach was even watching me during try-outs because I should have made varsity. I think they automatically put all the third-formers on the JV team. ” Melinda decided not to mention that her friend was on the varsity team, especially since he was talking so animatedly, she was not sure he would even hear her. “I also like to ski, but there’s no ski team here. That’s a bummer, but maybe I’ll just go up to the mountains every weekend once it starts getting cold. I suppose if I get really bored, I could just call my agent and do some more commercials. ” “What commercials were you in? ” “Oh, lots. I was in a series of soup commercials. ‘That was yummy! Can I have some more? ’ That was me. ” “Oh, I remember those! That’s so cool that that was you! ” “I also did some commercials for baby soap. ‘Ow! Mommy! That hurt my eyes. ’ And ‘See, Mommy? It doesn’t hurt my eyes anymore! ’ That was when I was a lot smaller, though. ” “I don’t remember that one. ” “Yeah, I’m not surprised. It was one of my first and not one of my best. ” There was another long, uncomfortable pause, during which Melinda successfully fought the urge to check her phone or text Sarah for advice. “So, um, where are you from? ” she asked after a few minutes. “Langley. New York. ” “Oh. Never heard of it. ” “It’s just over the border. Takes, like, three hours to get here. ” “Yeah, I live about two hours away. ” Another awkward silence followed, during which Melinda did check the time on her phone, only to discover she still had nearly an hour before she needed to get to the library. They had both finished eating, and apparently they did not have enough in common to have an engaging dialogue that lasted more than four exchanges each. Although Melinda was not thrilled with the idea of lying to Mike, she wracked her brain attempting to create a good excuse to leave, thus ending her first date. Mike glanced at his phone. “Hey! You wanna go for a walk? We can take the long way back to the dorms. ” “Um, sure? ” Melinda hoped they would pass something interesting enough to spark a conversation. They gathered their trash and deposited it in one of the waste receptacles on the edge of the football field as they walked towards the Arts Center, Mike again taking Melinda’s hand casually in his. As they crossed the street and headed towards the Arts Center, Mike turned to Melinda. “So, there’s a shuttle to the movies Sunday. Would you like to go with me? There’s a new Kara McGregor movie playing. ” Melinda hesitated a moment, mentally reviewing her weekend homework. If she broke her no homework on Saturday rule, she may be able to take a couple of hours off to go to the movies Sunday without falling too far behind on her work. She finally replied as they walked up the concrete steps and headed across the grass to the pond. That sounds great. What time is the shuttle? ” “Excellent. I was thinking we could catch the 11:30 shuttle, and maybe grab a bite to eat before going to the 1:30 show. That work for you? ” “Um, sure. The shuttle leaves from the MAC. I’ll meet you where we met today? At, like, 11:20? ” “Um, sure. ” Melinda was still smiling when she bounced into to her empty dorm room twenty minutes later, having parted with Mike at the front steps to her dorm. She was disappointed she could not share the details of her date with her roommate, but realized it was probably a good thing, since Melinda only had a few minutes before the start of study hours. She found one of her house advisors, Mrs. Price, and got permission to go to the library, where she found Walter had already begun studying in their regular location. “Hey, ” he said absently as Melinda began unpacking her books. She was a little out of breath from her brisk walk to the library with ten or twenty pounds of books on her back. Where’s Bella? ” Walter did not look up from whatever he was writing. “She had a Pep Squad meeting. How was your dinner? ” Melinda did not notice the bitterness in Walter’s voice. “Fine, I guess. How’d your physics test go? ” “I don’t like him. ” “Mr. Peters? ” Melinda knew that Walter and Larry had the same physics teacher as Sarah, although the boys had class first period and Sarah had it after lunch. “Isn’t he also, like, your house advisor? Why don’t you like him? ” “What? No. I don’t like Mike. ” Walter finally looked across the table at Melinda. “What are you talking about? What did Sarah say? ” “Sarah didn’t say anything. ” Frustration and bitterness were dripping through his words. “Mike was bragging about it on the field this afternoon. He didn’t say your name, but he kept talking about his big date with…” Walter trailed off and quickly bowed his head, writing furiously as he turned pink with embarrassment. “What? What did he say? ” “I don’t really remember. ” Walter’s refusal to meet Melinda’s eyes made her wonder whether he was lying to her. “But, I saw you sitting on the MAC steps, and I saw him take your hand, so I assumed you had dinner with him. So, what do you have against him? ” Walter snarled. “He’s arrogant. Conceited. Pompous. ” “He’s…huh? ” Melinda was vaguely familiar with those words, but she had no idea what Walter was trying to tell her. “No. I am not your dictionary! ” Walter grabbed Melinda’s assignment pad and scribbled the words on the bottom of the page. “Not this time. ” He practically threw the notebook back at her before plopping into one of the wingback chairs with his computer science textbook. Melinda did not want to waste any time looking up vocabulary words, but she was confused by Walter’s behavior. She hesitated a moment, then decided to do some exercises in her physics workbook to make sure she was understanding the assignments, figuring Walter may join her if she began reading aloud. Either Walter did not hear her quiet voice, or he simply ignored her, because he fumed in the wingback chair for a full half hour before returning to the table, during which time Melinda had finished with the workbook and was moving on to her actual physics assignment. Since Melinda’s physics test had been during her lab period yesterday and Walter’s was during his today, neither of them had lab reports to complete for next week, although they still had their regular assignments to complete for the next chapter. It took Melinda a long time to complete the physics, since Walter was still giving her the silent treatment, but when she closed her book with an exasperated sigh, Walter let out his own sigh of frustration and pulled her notebook to him. He used a pencil to make marks on her paper silently, then returned it to her wordlessly and opened his math book. Melinda reviewed Walter’s notes, making corrections as necessary, before returning her notebook to her backpack and opening her math notebook. Walter placed the book in the center of the table so Melinda could share it, and after another sigh, ended his silent treatment. “Look, I’m sorry. Mike rubbed me the wrong way and I was just trying to look out for you. ” “I appreciate your concern. ” Melinda spoke in a guarded tone, uncertain whether she was ready to forgive Walter’s outburst and wary of inciting another one. Walter’s response was equally cautious. “So? Are you gonna see him again? ” “Well, yeah. Monday. In English class. ” Walter smiled. “Ha, ha. You know that’s not what I meant. ” “I know. I just wanted to make you laugh. We’re going to the mall Sunday. We’re gonna see the new Kara McGregor movie. Maybe you and Bella can come with us. ” Walter’s smile quickly turned into a sulk. “Not going to happen. ” “Why not? I thought you wanted her to be your girlfriend. ” “It’s not that. It’s the movie. It’s a long story, but…just do me a favor. Never mention that movie again, okay? ” Although Melinda was confused, she wanted to keep the peace with Walter, so she agreed and turned her notebook to him allowing him to check his answers with hers. Smiling, he compared the two notebooks silently, making a few marks in his before returning Melinda’s and fixing his errors. Sarah was sitting at her desk writing feverishly in her German workbook when Melinda returned to the dorm room, placing her bag at her desk and sitting on her bed. “Ooh! Yay!! You’re back!! ” Sarah quickly glanced at the clock before throwing her pen on her notebook with a flourish and hopping onto her bed. “Tell me everything! ” Melinda shared with Sarah the details of her entire evening, from Mike’s initial Hi on the MAC steps to her own final Goodnight on the Woodward steps. She recounted every awkward silence and all the instances of hand-holding, noted the way Mike kept saying Excellent, excellent and lamented about how she lamely continued to respond to his inquiries with Um, sure. She explained that she thought the night was going poorly and was trying to think of an excuse to leave, but he must have thought it was going well, since he ended up asking her out for Sunday. And then, when she had finished giving Sarah all the details of her date, she went on to explain the incident between herself and Walter at the library. The only thing about her entire evening that Melinda did not share with her roommate was Walter’s reaction to the movie, since something in her gut suggested that should be kept confidential. “Well, of course Walter was upset, ” Sarah commented when Melinda had finished. “He’s jealous. But, he’s had two weeks to ask you out, so it’s his own fault, really. ” “He’s not jealous. He likes Bella. ” “No. Bella likes him. ” “He asked her to study with us. ” “Maybe he was trying to make you jealous. ” “But, we’re not like that. ” “Yeah, but does he know that? ” Melinda realized she wasn’t sure of the answer. By Hanmei, Myanmar The Wonderful Surprise of the Lord’s Return In June 2017, I got to know Sister Liu and Brother Duan, both in Germany on Facebook, and through my communication with them I saw that they were genuine and modest people. They had a very pure understanding of the scripture and the content they shared in fellowship really contained light and was very beneficial for me. After joining them for a few gatherings, I understood a number of truths I never had before. My heart was really brightened; I loved meeting with them. During one gathering, Brother Duan referenced this passage of scripture: “ For as the lightning comes out of the east, and shines even to the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be ” (Matthew 24:27). In his fellowship, he said that God would once again appear and work in the flesh in the last days, and that He had already come to the East, to China. He said that this prophecy had already been fulfilled. Hearing this, I felt a bit shocked, thinking, “The Lord Jesus has already returned? ” In this state, I thought of what I had heard the pastors and elders say, that only the people of Eastern Lightning bore witness that the Lord Jesus has already returned in the flesh. They told us we couldn’t believe in this, because only the Lord Jesus is Christ. I then felt really unsettled and no longer took heed of Brother Duan’s fellowship, thinking, “The pastors and elders are all people who serve God. They understand a lot about the Bible and they should have clarity on something as important as the Lord’s coming. I’ll ask them and then see! ” Listening to the Pastor and Sinking Into Darkness I went to church that Sunday and asked the pastor about Eastern Lightning testifying that the Lord Jesus has returned. He said, “Though the sermons of the people with Eastern Lightning are really lofty and are in line with the Bible, they bear witness that the Lord Jesus has already returned, that He is Almighty God in the flesh. That’s simply not possible. They just believe in a person, while we believe in the Lord Jesus, the only incarnation of God and God’s son. Plus the CCP government is doing all they can to condemn and strike out at The Church of Almighty God, saying that they just believe in a human being and that Eastern Lightning is organized by a person…. ” Hearing this I suddenly felt afraid, thinking, “If that’s true, then wouldn’t believing in Eastern Lightning be a betrayal of the Lord Jesus? ” I went back home, feeling ill at ease. I couldn’t get comfortable and couldn’t seem to do anything right. I even forgot to pick up my kid after school. I was really feeling in pain and in darkness, so I came before God in prayer: “Oh Lord! After hearing what the pastor had to say today I’ve felt very suspicious and guarded toward Brother Duan, and I don’t dare continue to seek and investigate Eastern Lightning. But the more doubts I have, the more darkness I feel, and I can’t feel Your presence anymore. Lord, I’m longing for Your return, but I’m also afraid of taking the wrong path and betraying You. I really don’t know what to do. Lord, may You enlighten and guide me so that I may discern right and wrong and know what choice to make. ” I gradually had more of a sense of peace after praying. Something Brother Duan had shared with me in fellowship suddenly came to mind: “In our faith, we must revere God as great and in all things seek His will. When encountering an issue, if we don’t seek the truth but just ask other people and listen to what they have to say, that’s not believing in God but is believing in and following man. ” With this in mind, I reflected on how, when I heard the news of the Lord’s return, I didn’t first seek and pray to God, but went straight over to ask the pastor. Isn’t that not having a place for God in my heart? I then thought of how, every time I joined a gathering with the brothers and sisters with The Church of Almighty God, their fellowship was well-founded, in line with Bible. It contained light and they fellowshiped very clearly on God’s will. After a few gatherings I understood many truths I never had before and my relationship with God had grown closer and closer. That was very clearly the work of the Holy Spirit! But I didn’t engage in seeking or submit to the Holy Spirit’s guidance. If I determine whether the Lord has truly returned based on what the pastor said because I thought that he knew more about the Bible, isn’t that just having faith in the pastor? Without a place for God in my heart, how could my spirit not be in darkness? I thought of how, when the Lord Jesus appeared and worked, the chief priests, scribes and Pharisees serving God in the temple refused to acknowledge that the Lord Jesus was the Messiah they were waiting for, even though they were very familiar with the scripture and well-versed in the law. They even madly condemned and opposed the Lord Jesus, ultimately nailing Him to the cross. At that point I finally realized that knowing the scripture well does not mean having knowledge of God, and if I just blindly listened to the pastor, that would not be in line with God’s will. I had to actively seek and investigate this to see whether Almighty God really is the return of the Lord Jesus. I resolved to continue going to gatherings with Brother Duan, and if I was able to determine that Almighty God really is the return of the Lord Jesus, I would accept and follow Him. Resolving My Doubts by Seeking the Truth The next time I got online for a gathering I shared my dilemma with my brother and sister to seek with them. I said, “Sister Liu, Brother Duan, our pastors and elders have said that you just believe in a person, and that only the Lord Jesus is God incarnate and the Son of God. And since the CCP government is also crazily condemning and striking out at The Church of Almighty God, saying that those in the church just believe in a human being and Eastern Lightning is organized by a person, I’m really concerned about believing in the wrong thing and betraying the Lord Jesus. I’d really like to hear your fellowship on this. ” Brother Duan then shared his fellowship on this: “Whether Almighty God really is God incarnate, whether He is the return of the Lord Jesus is not determined by the acknowledgment of any one person or government. It is determined by the very essence of God. Sister, we can be taken in by the lies of pastors and elders of the religious world and the CCP government because we don’t understand the truth about God’s incarnation and we don’t understand God’s essence. As for what the incarnation is, Almighty God’s words explain this very clearly. Let’s read some of it. Almighty God says, ‘ The meaning of incarnation is that God appears in the flesh, and He comes to work among man of His creation in the image of a flesh. So, for God to be incarnated, He must first be flesh, flesh with normal humanity; this is the most basic prerequisite. In fact, the implication of God’s incarnation is that God lives and works in the flesh, God in His very essence becomes flesh, becomes a man ’ (‘The Essence of the Flesh Inhabited by God’ in The Word Appears in the Flesh). ‘ God become flesh is called Christ, and so the Christ that can give people the truth is called God. There is nothing excessive about this, for He possesses the substance of God, and possesses God’s disposition, and wisdom in His work, that are unattainable by man. Those who call themselves Christ, yet cannot do the work of God, are frauds. The real Christ is not merely the manifestation of God on earth, but also the particular flesh assumed by God as He carries out and completes His work among man. This flesh is not one that can be replaced by just any man, but one that can adequately bear God’s work on earth, and express the disposition of God, and well represent God, and provide man with life ’ (‘Only Christ of the Last Days Can Give Man the Way of Eternal Life’ in The Word Appears in the Flesh). ‘ He who is God’s incarnation shall hold the substance of God, and He who is God’s incarnation shall hold the expression of God. Since God becomes flesh, He shall bring forth the work He must do, and since God becomes flesh, He shall express what He is, and shall be able to bring the truth to man, bestow life upon man, and show man the way. Flesh that does not contain the substance of God is surely not the incarnate God; of this there is no doubt. To investigate whether it is God’s incarnate flesh, man must determine this from the disposition He expresses and the words He speaks. Which is to say, whether or not it is God’s incarnate flesh, and whether or not it is the true way, must be judged from His substance. And so, in determining[a] whether it is the flesh of God incarnate, the key is to pay attention to His substance (His work, His words, His disposition, and many more), rather than external appearance. If man sees only His external appearance, and overlooks His substance, then that shows the ignorance and naivety of man ’ (Preface to The Word Appears in the Flesh). “God’s words explain the incarnation very clearly. God incarnate is God’s Spirit clothed in the flesh as a common man; He comes to the earth to speak and work, showing Himself to mankind. This is to save humanity. From the outside, God in the flesh looks average, totally normal. He seems to possess normal humanity just like any person. He eats and puts on clothing normally, and He has normal human feelings. But God incarnate is essentially different from us. As humans, we only possess normal humanity but lack the essence of divinity. We cannot express the truth and we cannot do the work that God Himself does. However, God incarnate not only possesses normal humanity, but complete divinity. He can do the work of God Himself. He can express God’s disposition, and what He has and is—He can provide us with the truth in accordance with our needs. This is something that not a single one of us, created beings, can achieve. On the surface, the Lord Jesus Christ looked exactly like an average person, but He opened up the Age of Grace and brought an end to the Age of Law, and brought us the way of ‘ Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand ’ (Matthew 4:17). He expressed a disposition of love and mercy, and during the time of His work and preaching He was able to express the truth at any time and any place to provide sustenance for people and give them a path of practice, such as the sermon on the mountain and forgiving others seventy times seven times. The Lord Jesus also cured the sick and cast out demons. He performed a number of miraculous deeds such as feeding five thousand people with five loaves and two fishes, calming the wind and sea with a word, bringing the dead back to life, and so on. Ultimately, the Lord Jesus was nailed to the cross and redeemed mankind of our sins, completing the work of redeeming all of mankind. We can see from His work and words, as well as the disposition that He expressed, that the Lord Jesus was God in the flesh—He was Christ. In the last days God has once again become flesh as Almighty God, appearing and working with His disposition of righteousness, majesty, and wrath. Although Almighty God may appear very common, very normal on the outside, and He possesses normal humanity, He has opened up the Age of Kingdom and concluded the Age of Grace. He has expressed all the truths necessary for us to be cleansed and attain final salvation, performing the stage of work of judging and cleansing mankind and saving us from the bondage of sin. Almighty God’s words have revealed all of the mysteries of the Bible, such as: the mysteries behind God’s name, the mysteries of His incarnations, the meaning of God doing the work of judgment in the last days, plus how God will end this age and how Christ’s kingdom will be realized on earth. Almighty God has revealed the truth of our corruption by Satan as well as our satanic nature that opposes God so that we come to understand our own arrogant, crooked, tricky, selfish, and despicable satanic dispositions while also pointing out a specific path for us to change these dispositions. We can see from Almighty God’s words and work as well as the disposition that He expresses that He really is God in the flesh, and His work and words are all built upon the foundation of the Lord Jesus’ work of redemption. The Lord Jesus said, ‘ I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. However, when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will show you things to come ’ (John 16:12–13). ‘ And if any man hear My words, and believe not, I judge him not: for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. He that rejects Me, and receives not My words, has one that judges him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day ’ (John 12:47–48). Almighty God’s appearance and work have completely fulfilled these prophecies, and this proves that Almighty God is the return of the Lord Jesus, and He is the appearance of Christ in the last days. So in order to welcome the Lord’s return, we can’t just look at Christ’s outward appearance but we should recognize His essence. God’s sheep hear His voice—many with true faith who long for the truth, by seriously investigating Almighty God’s work and words, have heard this voice and seen that it is the expression of the truth, that it comes from God. They have determined from their hearts that Almighty God is God incarnate, that He is the returned Lord Jesus, and they are now following God’s footsteps. ” Hearing Almighty God’s words and Brother Duan’s fellowship, I understood that God incarnate is God come down to mankind from heaven to express the truth, working to save mankind. From the outside it looks like Christ in the flesh is just as common and normal as we are, but His essence is divine; He can express the truth and do the work of God Himself. Not a single corrupt human being such as us possesses that. Wow! If we just look at Christ’s outward appearance but don’t focus on the truths expressed and the work done by God in order to recognize Christ’s divine essence, we won’t be able to recognize Christ. That really would make us prone to taking Christ for an ordinary person and doing things to reject and oppose God! Sister Liu went on to share this fellowship: “Now that we understand truths about God’s incarnation, so let’s give some thought to why the pastors and elders in religious circles won’t acknowledge that Almighty God is God in the flesh, that He is Christ of the last days. It’s mainly because the religious leaders do not remotely understand the incarnation. They don’t understand that God in the flesh possesses both normal humanity and full divinity. May You guide me to understand Your will and show me a path. ” After praying, a passage of God’s words came to mind. “ Those who God refers to as overcomers are those who are still able to stand witness, maintain their confidence, and their devotion to God when under the influence of Satan and under siege by Satan, that is, when within the forces of darkness. God’s words provided me with faith and strength, and allowed me to understand that God wanted to test my faith and devotion to Him through this onslaught from Satan, through which I could grow in my life. If I were to give in to my husband’s constraints and give up my faith in God, that would be giving in to Satan and betraying God. I could not fold to Satan in that spiritual battle—I had to hold on to my faith and devotion to God, be steadfast on the true way, and stand witness for God! I felt buoyed up after understanding God’s will, and I had the faith to continue undergoing this. My husband continued to go out every day, but I didn’t get angry with him. Instead, I spoke with him very calmly and was just as caring to him as always. To my surprise, a couple of weeks later he started running the business as usual again. I knew that this was God’s doing and I felt a surge of excitement. I saw that when I wasn’t hemmed in by what was going on around me but stayed firm in standing witness for God, Satan was shamed and retreated. I gave thanks to God for leading me out of that situation. My resolve to follow God became even greater after the experience of that spiritual battle. Thinking about that bumpy road I had been on, I felt indignant at the pastor’s behavior. Faced with the appearance and work of the returned Lord Jesus, not only did he not look into it himself, but he employed all sorts of tactics to prevent me from accepting the true way. They even sowed discord by telling Pontius Pilate that the Lord Jesus was leading an uprising to overthrow the Roman government, that He was fomenting political unrest. As a result, many of the Jewish people blindly heeded the Pharisees’ words, rejecting and condemning the Lord Jesus, and some even went along with the Pharisees in nailing Him to the cross. They were then condemned and damned by God. From the Pharisees’ many evil actions it can be seen that they were antichrists who prevented people from accepting the true way, who were vying with God for mankind. Once I had seen the essence of the Pharisees I also gained more clarity on the essence of the leaders within religious circles. With great restraint this film delves into both Amir and the influences around him leading eventually to the murder of Prime Minister Rabin. The direction and acting are on a very high level and anyone wishing to gain insight and learn lessons from this horrific event should invest the time in seeing this film. It provokes thought as well as feeling, thus qualifying it as an important piece of film making.

Им уже ничего не нужно от жизни, и та равнодушно проходит мимо них, нанизывая друг на друга бесконечные серые будни. Но однажды в Сочельник эта троица находит на улице потерянную новорожденную девочку. И в опустившихся бродяжках просыпаются забытые было человеческие чувства. Герои решают во что бы то ни стало найти родителей малютки, еще не подозревая, что, став ее ангелами-хранителями, они прикоснутся к чуду Рождества и получат шанс изменить свою собственную жизнь….
