Potrebbe fare carriera nel Nord degli Stati Uniti e invece sceglie di lavorare, in gran parte pro bono, per difendere i condannati a morte in Alabama, molti dei quali non hanno beneficiato di un regolare processo: e quasi tutti sono neri come lui. Fra questi c'è Walter McMillian, nel braccio della morte per l'omicidio di una 18enne bianca: un delitto al quale è completamente estraneo, ma per il quale bisognava trovare un colpevole in fretta, per "tranquillizzare la comunità" bianca. Basato sulla vera storia raccontata da Stevenson nel libro "Just Mercy" Il diritto di opporsi è il resoconto di una battaglia contro l'ingiustizia e il razzismo nello Stato reso celebre da Harper Lee con il suo "Il buio oltre la siepe" l'odissea di un innocente accusato ingiustamente di un omicidio e difeso dal coraggioso avvocato Atticus Finch. Il regista Destin Daniel Cretton prosegue il suo sodalizio artistico con Brie Larson, che qui ha il ruolo di un'avvocatessa locale, per raccontare una storia di ingiustizia e pregiudizio che, come molti film di questo periodo, raffigura l'umiliazione rituale degli afroamericani partendo dal più comune degli abusi della polizia yankee: il fermo ingiustificato, spesso accompagnato da mortificanti perquisizioni. Stevenson entra volontariamente in un abisso di scorrettezza e discriminazione razziale perché sa cosa voglia dire nascere nero in America ed essere etichettato sulla base del colore della pelle. "Basta guardarlo in faccia" è infatti la motivazione data dalle autorità dell'Alabama per incarcerare un innocente, e l'accusa "lombrosiana" nasconde una paura profonda del diverso. Cretton ricostruisce la vicenda di Stevenson sposando interamente il suo punto di vista, e questo purtroppo rende il racconto meno efficace. Ma questa (ennesima) storia di ingiustizia a sfondo razziale è il ritratto di un'America che ancora oggi tollera disparità ingiustificabili. La vicenda narrata infatti non accade negli anni Cinquanta ma nei Novanta, eppure incontra le resistenze e ostruzionismo dell'epoca precedente alle battaglie per i diritti civili degli afroamericani. Nel mirino c'è anche la pena di morte, qui illustrata da una lunga sequenza che dà (giustamente) la misura di quale lucida spietatezza entri in gioco nell'esecuzione di un essere umano. In questo contesto la popolazione nera non concepisce la propria esistenza come vita ma come sopravvivenza, sempre minacciata dall'arbitrio dei bianchi. E le tattiche usate dalle autorità per fare della comunità afroamericana un capro espiatorio "naturale" fanno accapponare la pelle. Tuttavia una visione meno manichea della vicenda narrata avrebbe giovato alla narrazione, e reso più sfaccettato il ragionamento. Michael B. Jordan e Jamie Foxx sono al servizio di questa visione sbilanciata, ma restano convincenti nei rispettivi ruoli del coraggioso avvocato e di McMillian. L'elemento di novità resta il fatto che oggi Atticus Finch può essere nero, il che dà un incoraggiamento alla comunità afroamericana per cui "la mancanza di speranza è il peggior nemico della giustizia. Il film racconta le vicissitudini dell'operaio nero Walter McMillan in galera in attesa dell'esecuzione della condanna a morte e dell'avvocato Bryan Stevenson che si è battuto per ottenere giustizia. Il film è sceneggiato e diretto da Daniel Cretton ed è tratto dal libro del 2014 "Just Mercy: a story of justice and redemption" scritto dall'avvocato e attivista per i diritti sociali Bryan Stevenson. Walter MacMillan, che nel film ha il volto di Jamie Foxx ( Django Unchained) era stato condannato a morte per l'omicidio di una ragazza di 18 anni bianca sulla base di testimonianze ottenute con la violenza da parte della polizia. L'avvocato Stevenson, interpretato da Michael B. Jordan ( Black Panther e Creed) non crede alla sua colpevolezza e decide di difenderlo nonostante il suo stesso assistito, oramai già nel braccio della morte e in attesa dell'esecuzione della sentenza, abbia perso ogni speranza. Il film segue la storia del legale alle prime armi, neo laureato Harvard e quindi con una carriera brillante ed estremamente remunerativa davanti, che sceglie invece di difendere le persone condannate ingiustamente. Stevenson viene aiutato nella sua missione da una collega, Eva, interpretata da Brie Larson ( Captain Marvel) e proprio con il caso McMillan ha il suo battesimo del fuoco. Una battaglia complicata dai pregiudizi razziali intorno al condannato reo di essere stato visto in giro con una donna bianca e avere un figlio sposato con una donna bianca in uno Stato, l'Alabama, dove i pregiudizi razziali sono ancora molto radicati. Come fanno gli americani i legal drama non li fa nessuno, basta non pensare che spesso sono film che semplicemente romanzano avvenimenti realmente accaduti. Il resto lo fa un cast azzeccato dove insieme al trio di star troviamo Rob Morgan, noto per il suo ruolo di Turk Barrett nelle serie di supereroi Marvel realizzate da Netflix, l'attore inglese Rafe Spall e Tim Blake Nelson che i più attenti ricorderanno in La ballata di Buster Scruggs dei fratelli Coen. È interessante che il regista Cretton abbia lavorato anche nei suoi due precedenti film con Brie Larson ( Short Term 12 e Il castello di vetro. L'avvocato Bryan Stevenson è il fondatore dell'organizzazione no-profit, Equal Justice Initiative, e nella sua lunga carriera ha assistito decine di persone in galera in attesa dell'esecuzione della condanna a morte. It didn't appear they were accompanying any VIP, but she thought she glimpsed 2 of them momentarily shape-shift, yet she couldn't be sure. She tried to nonchalantly follow them, but a fierce rearward glare from one of the 'shape-shifters' nixed that idea. Despite the aura of jetset elite, airport terminals were universally bland and tedious. Some tried to liven up the experience of waiting for flights with flashy artwork, but that technique was marginally successful at best.
